New York: Random House, 1953. Seuss, Dr. First Edition. hardcover. Near fine. / Very good. Item #2103606
A near fine first edition, with the correct list of titles on the back cover of the book and the dust jacket and the correct price of $2.50 on the front flap of the jacket. Later printings deleted the list of Seuss books on the back and changed the price on the jacket flap. This first edition has the original material which resulted in the recent decision of the Seuss estate to cease further publication of the book. However, even the most censorial reader will be hard pressed to find anything in the book that could be considered objectionable, much less racist, and certainly not by 1950's standards. Still, bound to be a collectible artifact forever for this artist, probably the most popular creator of illustrated children's books in history, at least based on books sold, read and reread, and enjoyed by children discovering the joy of reading. A large closed tear on the front panel of the dust jacket, but the jacket is completed otherwise very good. This is a large format book, and so usually turns up in very poor condition. This copy is in rare collectible condition.
