Navijivan, 1940. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. Very Good / Good. Item #1309077

Ahmedabad: Navijivan, 1940. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust jacket condition: good. 2nd Edition. Second edition in English of Gandhis autobiography, in original khadi cloth and uncut. Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhis concept of Satyagraha, active nonviolent resistance, led India to independence from Great Britain and inspired millions, including leaders such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Desmond Tutu. Gandhis nonviolent struggles in South Africa and India had already brought him to such a level of notoriety, adulation and controversy that when asked to write an autobiography midway through his career, he took it as an opportunity to explain himself. Although accepting his status as a great innovator in the struggle against racism, violence and, just then, colonialism, Gandhi feared that enthusiasm for his ideas tended to exceed a deeper understanding. He says that he was after truth in devotion to God and attempts to get closer to this divine power led him to seek purity through simple living, dietary practices, celibacy and ahimsa, a life without violence. It is in this sense that he calls his book The Story of My Experiments with Truth, offering it also as a reference for those who would follow in his footsteps (Brian Bruya). Gandhi offers an invaluable account of the shaping of a new path to collective resistance to injustice (Sissela Bok). Translated from Gujarati by Mahadev Desai. along with Pyarelal Nair. In the original khadi cloth, a homespun linen that Gandhi adopted as a symbol of Indian struggle against the British. Serialized in Gujarati in the weekly magazine Navjivan, 1925-28. (In 1929 Gandhi published a second volume of his autobiography. That book is not included here.) Very good condition, with spine much less faded than usual; at half title page paper to previous one is separating. Some small pieces missing, some wear and tear at dust jacket . Housed in a custom-made slipcase.
