With the imprimatur leaf. Illustrated with 19 engraved folding plates, complete. A phenomenal rare volume noted especially for Eusebio Francisco Kino's map which, like the rest of the book, is in very good condition, neat and bright and crisp. Substantial thick heavy 4to. volume with a great many fold-out copper engravings - anatomical, elephant, spiders, medical, geographical, &c. The Kino map is titled, A Passage by Land to California Discover'd by ye. Rev. Fathr. Eusebius Francis Kino, Jesuite between ye Years 1698 & 1701. This is the second English edition of Kino's historic map which refutes California being an island (a myth which continued to thrive). Along with the map is intriguing text - Of a Passage by Land to California, and a Description of that Country - containing the wonderful report of Francisco Maria Piccolo. Other contents include Of the Inoculation of the Small-pox, Microscopical Observations, Of a Child Crying in the Womb, The Antiquity of the Venereal Disease, Of the Veins and Arteries, New Teeth after 80 Years: and of Sugar, Roman Antiquities found in Britain, natural history, voyages and travels, A Remarkable Instance of Opium, The History of an Extraordinary Scurvy, The Osteology of an Elephant, Of the Method of Computing Interest, The Wood-Pecker's Tongue, Manuscripts, Printing, and Of the Invention and Progress of Printing, observations on the opossum, much medical content, and a great deal more. Original leather boards (worn), nicely rebacked, handsome leather spine, ribbed and blind-stamped. Internally, this is the brightest issue of a Phil. Trans. volume we have handled, scattered foxing and spotting (at edges for the most part), mostly very clean and crisp throughout including the many plates. Housed in custom-made slipcase. $1,500.
